Question about a metal my grandfather earn in World War ll? What Does a Theater Metal Represent?

My grandfather passed about 2 years ago. He was sevred in th army durning the time we got involed into WW2 till it ended. We were looking though some stuff and found his dischange papers. There it stated the metals he earn, where he went, and what he did. One of the metals was a "Theater Metal" of I think somthing like "AM Theater Metal" or something like that? I was woundering exactly what that meant? My mom was saying it may be have to do will combat cause i think it has to do with a play! LOL! So if you have any knowledge in the subject. Please respone! ^^

I don't think it was AM. Possibly ET or PT for European Theater or Pacific Theater, meaning he either served in Europe (Against Hitler) or the pacific (against Japan).

Medal. he got a medal. Theater medals have to do with different areas of the war. There were several simultaneous fronts during WWII. There was the pacific theater... the war in the pacific and there was the european theater, the war in France, Italy, Germany etc.

You should submit your grandfather's name to the WWII memorial in DC. They are accepting names all the time of people who served in the war for an electronic log or record. I sent them my Dad's name, my Mom's name and my father in laws name. the memorial they are building is very nice and should have been built a long time ago. Most of those veterans are like your grandpa, dead.
There was an american theater medal. It was awarded to soldiers who spent their war years in american territory. He could have been stationed stateside, in Hawaii or Alaska. Large numbers of troops were used in areas like this, or were deployed on ships that remained in US waters. I will be glad to review your grandfather's papers. This is a ribbon issued to GI's who served in the European theatre, during WWII. It is not necessarily a combat medal, because it was issued to all those who served in Europe during that war. Basically it shows that your grandfather was in the service and served in the European theatre during WWII.
first of all its medal,second,it was awarded to american soldiers who had performed duty during the american campaign,thats where the AM comes from,thats the way the army writes about decorations on soldiers orders.But anyways,it was given to those who participated in actual comabat in the pacific with the axis american theater, this applied primaraly 2 who had engaged in anti-uBoat patrols in the atlantic 2.
Your grandfather's medal is the American Theater Campaign Medal.
It referrs to which theater of operations he served with in time of war. For example European theater of operations, or Pacific theater, etc. It certifies that he was in a combat theater of operations, rather than say, a supply clerk on a base inside the U.S.
I would check with the U.S.Army website and see if there is a place where you can check about Medals and Military Citations of WWII.
Theater means the area that he served in. He could have earned a metal specific to his theater of combat (European Theater) it may be better to look it up alone and find some army resources or find a WW2 historian who will probaly be more than happy to help you. You may be able to find some government records to help you.
All a Theater Metal means is your grandfather served within a particular area during the war (normally in a war zone.) It doesn't mean, however, that he actually took part in any combat actions, but the metal doesn't exclude that he saw action. If your grandfather actually took part in action he would have received other medals or ribbons signifying combat participation.

In 199? President Clinton authorized the Combat Action Ribbon for those who participated in combat actions during WWII. If your grandfather participated in combat operations he is entitled to this ribbon. There is no medal for the Combat Action Ribbon.
